I'm a doctoral candidate at Cornell University, interested in how animals can play a part in putting certain people in positions of power. My research focuses on this question in the South Caucasus during the Bronze Age (which is around 5,500 to 3,000 years ago!). Very long story short: cattle made some people rich in the Middle Bronze Age and then, in the Late Bronze Age, the ability to hunt wild animals (like deer) gave people in power the authority to control people.
